Sustainability & Community Impact
Our philosophy at Komodo Holidays is rooted in the Indonesian concept of “Menjaga Warisan” – guarding the heritage. We operate in one of the most ecologically fragile and significant locations on Earth: a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a Man and the Biosphere Reserve, and the home of the legendary Komodo dragon. We consider it our fundamental responsibility to not only protect this natural and cultural heritage but to leave it better than we found it. Our commitment to sustainability is not a marketing slogan; it is woven into every aspect of our operations, from the partners we choose to the experiences we deliver.
Environmental Commitments: Protecting a Pristine Paradise
Our environmental strategy focuses on minimizing our footprint, contributing to conservation science, and educating our guests to be ambassadors for this incredible ecosystem.
- Marine Conservation & Reef Protection: We financially support and share data with conservation partners like Manta Watch and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia. All our voyages adhere to strict protocols: we use designated mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage, enforce a strict no-touch policy for all marine life, and provide only reef-safe sunscreen for our guests.
- War on Plastic: We have a zero-tolerance policy for single-use plastics. All guests receive a personal reusable water bottle upon arrival. Our vessels are equipped with advanced water filtration systems, and we have eliminated plastic straws, bags, and single-use toiletries from our entire supply chain.
- Advanced Waste Management: We mandate that all our partner vessels are equipped with modern waste management and wastewater treatment systems. All waste is sorted and properly disposed of at designated facilities in Labuan Bajo, never in the park.
- Carbon Responsibility: We acknowledge the carbon footprint of travel. We are actively developing a partnership with a Flores-based reforestation project to offer our guests a transparent and impactful way to offset the carbon emissions from their flights and voyage.
Community Empowerment: Investing in People
Sustainable tourism cannot exist without a thriving local community. We are committed to ensuring that the economic benefits of tourism are shared equitably and contribute to the well-being and cultural preservation of the people of Flores and the surrounding islands.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: We have a firm policy of ‘Flores First’ for hiring. Over 85% of our guides, boat crew, and ground staff are from local communities around Labuan Bajo, Rinca, and Seraya. We are committed to paying fair, living wages that are significantly above the regional minimum.
- Professional Development: We invest in our people. We provide continuous training opportunities for our team, including English language courses, HPI guide certification, PADI divemaster training, and advanced first aid and hospitality training.
- Supporting Local Enterprises: We prioritize local sourcing for our provisions, purchasing fresh fish, fruits, and vegetables from local markets in Labuan Bajo. Guest amenities, such as the hand-woven ‘tenun’ textiles found in cabins, are sourced directly from artisan cooperatives in villages like Melo.
- Direct Community Investment: A percentage of the profits from every Komodo holiday booked is channeled into our Community Empowerment Fund. Current projects include funding a waste collection and recycling program in the fishing village of Papagarang and providing essential school supplies to the children of Rinca village.
Our Promise for the Future

The scent of frangipani blossoms hangs heavy in the humid air as a local artisan, generations removed from the first seafarers, meticulously carves a wooden replica of a Komodo dragon, a testament to the living culture of the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Community empowerment and cultural preservation
Komodo Holidays understands that true sustainability extends beyond protecting landscapes and seascapes; it embraces the welfare and empowerment of the people who call this extraordinary region home. Our commitment to “Menjaga Warisan” inherently includes safeguarding the vibrant cultural traditions and economic well-being of local communities. We prioritize local employment, ensuring that over 90% of our on-the-ground team are Indonesian nationals, many hailing directly from Flores and
